Regional Donor Facilities

The Foreign Investment Advisory Service offers advisory assistance to all developing member countries of the World Bank Group. As part of the FIAS Trust Fund resources, donor contributions are generally used to cover all expenses related to this advisory work. Some donors have particular regional interests that takes into account in its operations. In a few instances, individual donors provide specific funds in support of particular regions or country groupings.

The Asia-Pacific Regional Office

Since 1995, the governments of Australia and New Zealand have provided financial support for FIAS activities in the Asia Pacific region, with a special emphasis on Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. This support has allowed FIAS to establish a regional office, operating from Sydney, which is responsible for the management of both the Asia and the Pacific Program. Funding for the period July 2001 to June 2004 was finalized early in 2001.

The Swiss Africa Facility

Besides its annual contribution to the general FIAS Trust Fund, the government of Switzerland decided to provide additional resources to support FIAS advisory work in African countries. This facility has existed since 1999, and has supported advisory work in countries such as Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The Swiss government is currently considering a replenishment of this facility.

The Swiss Balkan Facility

Because of its special interest in the Balkan countries, and following the positive experience with the Africa Facility, the government of Switzerland decided in 2000 to establish a special support facility for this region. Since then, this facility has helped fund FIAS advisory assistance in countries such as Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Yugoslavia. The Swiss government is considering a replenishment of this facility.
